How We Test & Rate Privacy Protection Services
Our testing methodology evaluates services across five key dimensions. We sign up for and use every service ourselves to provide you with accurate, unbiased reviews. Here's how we approach each dimension:
Coverage & Accuracy
We test how comprehensive each service's data is — what types of records are included, how current the information is, and how accurate the results are compared to known data. We perform multiple searches using each service and verify the results against known information.
Ease of Use
We evaluate the user interface, search speed, report readability, and overall experience for first-time users. We rate how intuitive each platform is and whether users can easily find the information they need.
Value for Money
We analyze pricing tiers, what's included at each level, and how the cost compares to competitors offering similar features. We look for transparent pricing with no hidden fees.
Privacy & Security
We review each company's data handling policies, opt-out procedures, and how they protect the information you provide during sign-up. We assess whether services follow best practices for user privacy.
Customer Support
We contact customer service teams directly to evaluate response times, helpfulness, and the quality of their cancellation and refund processes. We test both email and phone support when available.
WatchdogScore
Our proprietary WatchdogScore combines these five factors into a single rating from 1-10. Each dimension is weighted based on its importance to consumers:

Services scoring 9.0 or above receive our Editor's Choice designation. Those scoring 8.0-8.9 are rated as Highly Recommended, while 7.0-7.9 are Recommended.
Our Promise to Readers
We update our reviews regularly to ensure our recommendations reflect the current state of each service. When services change their pricing, features, or policies, we re-test and update our scores accordingly. Our reviews are entirely independent — we never accept payment for positive coverage.
